1984 was a ridiculous year for music. Prince gave us Purple Rain, the Boss released Born in the U.S.A., Metallica delivered Ride the Lightning and, of course, Van Halen released 1984. Up in Edmonton, SNFU were also recording their debut album, ...And No One Else Wanted to Play, in December of that year.

It was also the year this Tokai Breezysound TTE-50 BLR was made in Japan.

Tokai had some of the coolest guitar names of the era — Breezysound, Springy Sound, Love Rock — and behind those names were some seriously well-built instruments. Japanese Tokais from this period developed a reputation for exceptional quality, and the Breezysound has become one of the most recognizable examples.

This one has aged exactly the way you hope a vintage guitar will.

The original Blonde finish has developed a warm, naturally aged patina that now leans beautifully toward butterscotch, with the wood grain still visible underneath. There are chips, marks and honest signs of playing throughout, but that is part of what gives a 42-year-old guitar like this its character.

Maybe blondes really do have more fun.

The round-lam rosewood fingerboard gives the guitar the classic early-’60s-style look, while period details including the Tokai-stamped six-saddle bridge, vintage-style Deluxe tuners and original “50” model-grade sticker help give this Breezysound its unmistakable vintage Tokai identity.

The guitar does have two known non-original exterior components. One of the control knobs has been replaced, and the original-style output jack cup has been replaced with a two-screw oval jack plate. These changes are clearly visible in the photographs and do not take away from what is otherwise a wonderfully honest vintage Japanese guitar.

Condition & Originality

This guitar is 42 years old and shows natural cosmetic wear, finish ageing, chips, marks and patina consistent with a vintage instrument that has been played and enjoyed. Please review the detailed photographs closely for its exact cosmetic condition.

The original Blonde finish has aged naturally to a warmer butterscotch hue while still allowing the wood grain to show through.

The original “50” model-grade sticker remains present.

One control knob has been replaced.

The original-style output jack cup has been replaced with a two-screw oval jack plate. The originality of the internal electrical jack itself has not been confirmed.

No other modifications are known to us.
