1994 Fender MIJ Precision Bass Lyte Fretless – Montego Black

The Fender Precision Bass Lyte is one of those hidden gems from Fender Japan. It takes the foundation of the classic P-Bass and reworks it into something lighter, sleeker and more sculpted, with a deeply contoured body, additional cutaway carving, P/J pickup configuration, active electronics and a high-mass bridge.

This Montego Black example dates to 1994 — and what a year to come from. Superunknown, Ill Communication, Purple, Jar of Flies, Weezer's Blue Album, The Downward Spiral, Dookie, Illmatic, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and Ready to Die all landed that year. Not a bad soundtrack for a Japanese Fender.

At some point in its life, this Precision Bass Lyte was professionally converted to fretless, and the workmanship is excellent. The frets were cleanly removed and the slots carefully filled, leaving subtle lines across the rosewood fingerboard that provide useful visual reference points. It's a beautifully executed conversion — done so well that when we first inspected the bass, we thought it was a factory fretless.

And that's where this bass gets really fun. The fretless neck brings slides, movement and expressive phrasing into the equation, while the P/J pickup combination and active EQ give you plenty of room to shape the sound — from warm, rounded lows to punchier, more articulate tones. The bass is currently strung with flatwound strings, a natural pairing with the fretless fingerboard that adds to its smooth feel and warm, rounded character. Slide into some seriously phat grooves.

The Lyte also doesn't feel like a standard Precision Bass strapped on. Its smaller, heavily sculpted body sits differently against you, with the deep contours and extra cutaway carving contributing to the lightweight, comfortable feel that gave the series its name.

It's a seriously cool piece of '90s Fender Japan — a hidden-gem Precision design made even better by a beautifully executed fretless conversion.

This bass is in very good used condition, with honest cosmetic wear consistent with an instrument from 1994. Please review the detailed photographs closely for its exact cosmetic condition.
